Switching guide
How to switch from Tap Inspect to Househound
Short answer
Switching from Tap Inspect to Househound brings over your templates and comment library (from a full-report PDF, or from the Saved Comments JSON Tap Inspect support can send), your clients and agents (import Tap Inspect's contacts.csv), and your past reports (upload the PDFs to Househound's past-report archive, where they're read-only, searchable and shareable). Your schedule and job history don't import, so keep the job-history CSV. Expect an afternoon of setup and a week or two of running both. Tap Inspect keeps a cancelled account readable, so your old reports also stay available there after you stop paying.
What comes over from Tap Inspect
- TemplatesImports
Download a full-report PDF from Tap Inspect and drop it on the Templates page. Autodraft reads it into a template of areas, items and comments for you to review. Tap Inspect doesn't publish a template file export, so a finished report is the source.
- Comment library (Saved Comments)Imports
Comes in with the template: every comment the importer reads lands in your comment library. Tap Inspect support can also send a JSON export of Saved Comments: drop the .json file on the Templates page and Househound reads it as a document into a draft template and comment library you review. It isn't an exact field-by-field import, so check the types and severities.
- Report branding and logoSet up fresh
Upload your logo and set your company details and report footer in Settings › Organization. There is one report design: no custom colors or layouts, and a "Powered by Househound" line on every report.
- Clients and agentsImports
Export contacts.csv from Tap Inspect (Contacts, the [...] menu, Export Contacts), then in Househound open People › Clients or Agents › Import contacts… and pick the file (CSV or Excel). You map each column and see a preview; a contact whose email is already saved is updated, not duplicated. Web only.
- Past reportsImports
Download the full-report PDFs from Tap Inspect, then upload them to the past-report archive (Reports › Archive › Past reports): read-only, searchable by address, client, email and date, and shareable by link. They don't become Househound inspections. Tap Inspect also keeps published reports available after you cancel.
- Job historyKeep where it is
Not imported. Export Job History to CSV from Tap Inspect for the address, date and client list, and keep it with your records.
- Services and feesSet up fresh
Enter your services in Settings › Services & pricing, or start from the built-in list of about 35 (radon, sewer scope, WDO and more). Price rules can add by square footage, bedrooms or units.
- AgreementsImports
Upload your agreement file (PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT or MD, up to 15 MB) in Automations › Agreements and it shows on the signing page as written. There's no automatic text extraction: paste the text into the editor if you want merge fields filled in.
- Email wordingSet up fresh
Copy the wording of your Autopilot emails into Automations › Email. Househound has editable emails for booking, reminders, the agreement, the invoice, report ready and the follow-up.
- Booking pageSet up fresh
Set it up in Settings › Booking page, then replace Tap Inspect's Web Scheduler link or embed on your website with Househound's. Bookings arrive as requests you approve.
- PaymentsSet up fresh
Set up payments in Settings › Services & pricing. Money goes to your own Stripe account, and the fee is 3.25% + 40¢ per card payment with Stripe's processing included (Canadian companies take payments in CAD, at 3.25% + C$0.40). Your Tap Inspect Payments history stays with Tap Inspect.
- Team membersSet up fresh
Invite each inspector from the People page and set their permissions. The first inspector is $99 a month and each added inspector is $69 a month, or $990 and $690 a year on annual billing.
- Calendar and scheduleSet up fresh
Not imported, and there's no Google Calendar sync. Finish jobs already booked in Tap Inspect there, and book new ones in Househound.
Step by step
Step 1: Export what you want to keep from Tap Inspect
Do this first, while your subscription is active. Every path below is from Tap Inspect's help center.
- Contacts: sign in to the web account, open Contacts, tap the action button [...], choose Export Contacts, pick Everyone (or Only Specific Roles), tap Export, then Download to save contacts.csv.
- Job history: on the Jobs Dashboard, open the action menu [...] and choose Export Job History. Pick "Job and client details", the date range and the statuses you want. The CSV has the address, date, services and client details. It does not include photos or report contents.
- Report PDFs: open a job, go to its Review tab, tap the report, scroll to the bottom of the section list, tap Download Report, then Download Full Report.
- Photos in bulk: the Google Drive integration (app.tapinspect.com/integrations, Add Google Drive, then Backup All Team Data Now) copies reports and full-size photos into a "Tap Inspect Data" folder. In Tap Inspect's Modern experience the full and summary PDFs are generated on demand and are not sent to Drive, so download the PDFs you need one by one.
- Saved Comments: Tap Inspect's help center says support can provide a JSON export. Ask for it: it holds wording that never appeared in a report, and Househound's template importer accepts the .json file.
Step 2: Pick the reports you'll build templates from
Choose 1 to 3 finished reports with the most findings in them: an older house with a long report is better than a clean new build. The importer builds the template from what's on the page, so a comment that never appeared in a report won't come across from a PDF (the Saved Comments JSON covers those). Use Download Full Report, not the summary.
If you use separate Tap Inspect templates for different jobs (Home, Multi-Family, Commercial), download one report from each. Each file becomes its own Househound template.
Step 3: Create your Househound account
Sign up on the web at househoundusa.com/signup. Your first 3 reports are free and no card is needed. Accounts are created on the web; the iPhone, iPad and Android apps are for signing in once the account exists.
Step 4: Import your templates on the web dashboard
Open Templates and choose Import, or use the Templates step in the setup wizard, where import is listed first. Drop up to 10 files at once, each up to 20 MB. A photo-heavy report PDF can pass 20 MB; if one does, pick a report with fewer photos.
Each file is read by Autodraft into a template of areas, items and comments. If support sent your Saved Comments as JSON, drop that file too: it's read as a document into a draft, the same way as a PDF, rather than parsed field by field. The import keeps running if you close the page, and a tray shows its progress. Import is on the web dashboard only, not in the phone apps.
Step 5: Review the template and the comment library
A template read from a PDF is a draft. Open it and check:
- area and item names, and their order
- each comment's type (informational, limitation or deficiency) and, for deficiencies, its severity (major, moderate or minor)
- anything specific to the house the report came from, such as an address or "the north bedroom", that should read as general wording
Tap Inspect's comment types (Information, Safety Concern, Repair Needed and any you added) don't map one to one, so set the type and severity you want. Every comment also lands in the comment library, where it's available to any template.
Step 6: Import your contacts and upload your past report PDFs
Both are on the web dashboard only.
- Contacts: open People, then Clients or Agents, and choose Import contacts…. Pick the contacts.csv you exported (CSV or Excel, up to 5,000 rows), map each column (name, email, phone, company, type, notes), check the preview and choose what untyped rows become. A contact whose email is already saved is updated rather than duplicated, and every skipped row is listed with the reason.
- Past reports: open Reports › Archive › Past reports and upload the full-report PDFs, up to 50 at a time and 50 MB each. Househound reads the address, client, email and date from each PDF, and you can correct them. They're read-only: you can search, open, download, copy a share link or email one to the client, but they don't become Househound inspections.
Step 7: Set up services, agreements, email, booking and Stripe
- Services: Settings › Services & pricing. Add your fees, or start from the built-in list.
- Agreement: Automations › Agreements. Upload your current agreement file or paste its text. By default it goes out 48 hours before the inspection.
- Email wording: Automations › Email. Paste in the wording you used in Autopilot.
- Booking page: Settings › Booking page. Set your start times, then copy the link or the embed code.
- Payments: Settings › Services & pricing › Set up payments. Payments go straight to your own Stripe account. The fee is 3.25% + 40¢ per card payment, and that includes Stripe's processing, so it's the only deduction.
Step 8: Write one real inspection in Househound with Tap Inspect still open
Take the next ordinary inspection in Househound and keep Tap Inspect on hand. Inspections within a week of today download to the phone, so you can write in a crawlspace with no signal and it uploads later. Note every comment you reach for that isn't there, and add it to the template or save it from the report into the library.
Step 9: Point your website's booking link at Househound
Replace the Web Scheduler link or embed with your Househound booking page link or embed code. Leave Tap Inspect running until every job booked there is done and published.
Step 10: Cancel Tap Inspect
Tap Inspect has no long-term contracts. In the web account, open Subscription from the user menu and tap Cancel Subscription, then Yes, Cancel My Subscription. Pay As You Go is prepaid, so there's nothing to cancel there. If you used Tap Inspect Payments, ask Tap Inspect support how to close the payments account, which carries a $5.00 monthly account fee.
What doesn't carry over (and what to do instead)
Templates, your comment library, your contacts and your past report PDFs all come across. Two things don't:
- The schedule stays in Tap Inspect until those jobs are done. Services, fees and the calendar are set up fresh.
- Past reports stay PDFs. In the archive they're read-only records you can search and share, not Househound inspections you can edit, republish or invoice.
Some Tap Inspect features have no Househound equivalent, and you should know before you move:
- Text messages. Tap Inspect has sent SMS since October 2024. Househound sends email only.
- Re-inspections. Tap Inspect documents a re-inspection workflow. Househound has no workflow that carries earlier findings forward.
- Integrations. Tap Inspect connects to Google Calendar, Google Drive, Mailchimp, ISN, webhooks and an API. Househound has no customer-facing integrations.
- A summary PDF. Tap Inspect's client portal offers a full or a summary PDF download. Househound delivers the report as a link with a PDF download of the same report, and the delivery email links to the PDF; there's no separate summary PDF.
Repair requests are closer than they were. Tap Inspect's Repair Request Lists are in beta; in Househound the client or the buyer's agent builds a repair request from the published report in the browser and shares it as a link, copies it as text, downloads a CSV or prints it.
What you gain is mostly on the field side: an Android app, offline work on inspections a week either side of today, several inspectors writing in one report at once, and Autodraft, which turns a spoken note into a drafted finding from your own comment library that you approve before it's saved. The Househound vs Tap Inspect comparison covers the rest.
Keeping old Tap Inspect reports
Tap Inspect's help center says a cancelled account stays readable in the app and the web dashboard, and previously published reports stay available to you and your clients. You can't publish new reports or update old ones.
That covers most needs, but it depends on Tap Inspect keeping your account. If your state or your insurer expects you to keep reports on file, download the full PDF of each one you're required to keep and upload them to Househound's past-report archive (Reports › Archive › Past reports), up to 50 at a time. They're read-only there, searchable by address, client, email and date, and you can copy a share link (valid for 90 days) or email one to the client. The job-history CSV gives you an index to check them against. The archive isn't part of Househound's data export, so keep your own copy of the PDFs too.
If you run a team on Tap Inspect
Tap Inspect's Inspection Team plan is $90 a month plus $45 for each added inspector. Househound is $99 a month for the first inspector and $69 for each added one, or $990 and $690 a year on annual billing, with every feature included and no per-report fee:
| Inspectors | Tap Inspect Team per month | Househound per month | Househound annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $90 | $99 | $990 ($82.50 a month) |
| 3 | $90 + 2 × $45 = $180 | $99 + 2 × $69 = $237 | $2,370 ($197.50 a month) |
| 10 | $90 + 9 × $45 = $495 | $99 + 9 × $69 = $720 | $7,200 ($600 a month) |
On price alone, Tap Inspect's Team plan is lower at every team size, even against Househound's annual price.
Templates and the comment library belong to the company, so import once and every inspector uses the same wording. Invite each inspector from the People page and choose what they can do: create inspections, see the team's reports, edit the company library, manage settings. Payroll statements and per-inspector stats are on the web dashboard.
Tap Inspect-specific gotchas
- The Report Summary PDF always includes photos, per Tap Inspect's help center. For template import, use the full report anyway: the summary leaves out every comment that isn't a defect.
- Modern experience PDFs aren't in Google Drive. If you relied on the Drive backup, check that the PDFs you need are downloaded.
- Unused Pay As You Go jobs stay in your account. They're prepaid, so use them to finish the jobs already booked in Tap Inspect.
- iPhone to Android. Tap Inspect is iPhone and iPad only. Househound runs on both, plus Android, so a crew member on Android can write reports.
Questions
Can I import my Tap Inspect templates into Househound?
Yes, from a report. Download a full-report PDF from Tap Inspect and drop it on the Templates page in Househound's web dashboard. Autodraft reads it into a template of areas, items and comments that you review before using. Tap Inspect doesn't publish a template file export.
What happens to my Tap Inspect saved comments?
They come in two ways. Every comment in a report PDF you import is added to your Househound comment library. Tap Inspect support can also send a JSON export of Saved Comments, which the template importer accepts: it's read as a document into a draft template and comment library you review, not parsed field by field, so check the types and severities after.
Do my old Tap Inspect reports stay online after I cancel?
Yes, according to Tap Inspect's help center: previously published reports stay available to you and your clients, and the account stays readable. You can't publish or update reports after cancelling. Download PDFs of any report you must keep on file and upload them to Househound's past-report archive, where they're read-only, searchable and shareable.
Can I import my Tap Inspect clients and agents?
Yes. Export contacts.csv from Tap Inspect (Contacts, the [...] menu, Export Contacts), then in Househound's web dashboard open People › Clients or Agents › Import contacts… and pick the file. You map the columns and check a preview, and a contact whose email is already saved is updated rather than duplicated.
Does Househound send text messages like Tap Inspect?
No. Househound sends email only: booking confirmations, reminders, agreements, invoices, report ready and follow-up. If your clients rely on texts from you, that's a real gap to weigh.
Is Househound more expensive than Tap Inspect?
Usually, yes. For one inspector on monthly billing, Househound is $99 a month and Tap Inspect Unlimited is $90; Househound's annual plan is $990 a year ($82.50 a month). Tap Inspect's Pay As You Go ($7.50 a job, in blocks of 20) is cheaper still for low volume, and its Team plan ($45 per added inspector) is lower than Househound's $69. Househound has no per-report fee, and your first 3 reports are free with no card.
Will Househound move my data for me?
No, there's no done-for-you migration service. The import runs on your own files. If a file doesn't come through the way you expect, email hello@househoundusa.com.
