Switching guide
How to switch from HomeGauge to Househound
Short answer
HomeGauge templates are .ht5 files that only HomeGauge's own software opens, so Househound can't read them directly. The working route is a PDF: save a report from the HomeGauge Desktop Report Writer as a PDF (ideally a practice report with every comment you use selected), and Househound's Autodraft reads it into a draft template and comment library for you to review. Contacts import from a CSV or Excel file, and past reports saved as PDFs go into Househound's read-only past-report archive. Services and schedules don't import, so copy your HomeGauge data folder and export your report list before you cancel.
What comes over from HomeGauge
- TemplatesImports
Househound doesn't open .ht5 template files. Save a HomeGauge report as a PDF and drop it on the Templates page; Autodraft reads it into a draft template of areas, items and comments for you to review. Up to 10 files at once, 20 MB each.
- Comment libraryImports
Built from the comments in the file you import and added to your company comment library. Only comments that appear in that file come over, so import a report with every comment you use selected.
- Report branding and logoSet up fresh
Upload your logo, company details and report footer in Settings. Househound has one report design with no Narrative or Grid styles, no custom colors, and a "Powered by Househound" line on every report.
- Clients and agentsImports
Your contacts list lives in the HomeGauge data folder; copy the folder to keep it. HomeGauge's help center doesn't document a contact export, so ask HomeGauge support for your list as a spreadsheet, then in Househound go to People → Clients or Agents → Import contacts… A CSV or Excel file works, and a contact whose email is already saved is updated, never duplicated.
- Past reportsImports
Save the reports you need as PDFs from the Desktop Report Writer, then upload the PDFs to the past-report archive (Reports → Archive → Past reports): read-only, searchable, shareable. They don't become Househound inspections. Keep the data folder, the Inspector Dashboard uploads and the Export Report List spreadsheet too.
- Services and feesSet up fresh
Not imported. Start from the starter service library (about 35 services) or enter your own, then add price rules for square footage, bedrooms or units.
- AgreementsImports
Upload your agreement file (PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT or MD, up to 15 MB) to show on the signing page, and paste its text into the editor if you want merge fields. Text isn't pulled out of the file for you.
- Email wordingSet up fresh
Househound has about 27 editable client and agent emails with merge fields and a live preview. Copy your HomeGauge wording in by hand.
- Booking pageSet up fresh
Set your start times, services and crew rules in place of ScheduleNow, then link to your booking page or embed it on your site. Bookings arrive as requests you approve.
- PaymentsSet up fresh
Connect your own Stripe account. Card payments carry one 3.25% + 40¢ fee that includes Stripe's processing.
- Team membersSet up fresh
Invite each inspector and set their role and permissions. The first seat is $99 a month and each added inspector is $69 a month (or $990 and $690 a year on annual billing).
- Calendar and scheduleSet up fresh
Not imported. Enter upcoming inspections by hand, or let jobs already booked in HomeGauge finish there.
Step by step
Step 1: Copy your HomeGauge data folder
Your HomeGauge reports, templates, invoices and contacts list live on your Windows computer, in the HomeGauge data folder. In the Desktop Report Writer, click File → Show Data folder to open it wherever it is (HomeGauge: locating the data folder). The usual locations are
Documents\HomeGauge,AppData\Local\Homegauge(a hidden folder) orC:\HomeGauge.Copy the whole folder to an external drive. HomeGauge recommends copying rather than cutting (HomeGauge: transferring between devices). This is your archive: HomeGauge's own Back Up HG User Settings skips reports, attachments and drawings (HomeGauge: backup and report transfer).
Step 2: Export your report list from the Inspector Dashboard
Sign in to the HomeGauge Inspector Dashboard (from the desktop software, HG Services → My HomeGauge Dashboard), click My Reports, scroll to the bottom and click Export Report List (HomeGauge: exporting report list). You get a spreadsheet listing every report you uploaded, not the reports themselves.
Reports you uploaded with Upload Report To Website are kept online for at least 5 years, per HomeGauge. Reports you never uploaded exist only in your data folder.
Step 3: Save a report as a PDF to rebuild your template from
Househound can't open .ht5 template files, so give it a PDF instead. The template can only hold the comments the PDF contains, and a real report carries only the comments that applied to that house. Use a practice report where every comment you use is selected, in every section.
To save the PDF from the Desktop Report Writer (HomeGauge: upload, print or save a report):
- Click Publish on the top toolbar. If it warns that not every question is answered, choose Yes.
- Check Report for Printing or Saving and clear the other document settings.
- Click Print to open the preview.
- Click the blue floppy disk icon at the top left, name the file, and click Save.
Make one PDF per template you use (home, condo, commercial). If your HomeGauge version can export your comments to a spreadsheet, that file works too; HomeGauge's help center doesn't document it, so ask HomeGauge support if you want to try.
Step 4: Create your Househound account
Sign up on the web at househoundusa.com/signup. Your first 3 reports are free and there's no card to enter. Househound runs in a browser on Windows or Mac, and the inspecting happens in the iPhone, iPad or Android app.
Step 5: Import the PDFs on the Templates page
In the Househound web dashboard, open Templates, click Import, and drop your PDFs on it (or click to choose them). During setup, the templates step opens with Bring your own template, which does the same thing.
Up to 10 files go in at once, 20 MB each. Each file becomes its own template, and the import keeps running if you close the page. Scanned pages and phone photos of printed reports (including HEIC) work too, and so do Word .docx files. An older .doc file has to be opened in Word and saved as .docx or PDF first.
Step 6: Review the draft template and comment library
A template read from a PDF is a draft, so read it before you use it. Autodraft builds the areas, items and comments from what's on the page and suggests a comment type and a severity (major, moderate or minor) for each deficiency. Check that:
- every HomeGauge section you use has an area, and the items under it are in your order
- the comment wording matches yours, word for word
- severities match how you rate those defects
- informational fields, such as roof material or water heater age, are set up the way you fill them in
Fix anything in the template editor on the web. Every comment also lands in the comment library, which is what Autodraft reuses when it turns your spoken notes into drafted findings.
Step 7: Import your contacts and upload past report PDFs
If you have your contacts as a spreadsheet, go to People → Clients → Import contacts… (or People → Agents) on the web. CSV and Excel files both work, up to 5,000 rows and 5 MB. You map each column (name, email, phone, company, type, notes) and see a preview first. A contact whose email is already saved is updated, never duplicated, and every skipped row is listed with the reason.
For old reports, open Reports → Archive → Past reports and upload the PDFs you saved from HomeGauge, up to 50 at a time, 50 MB each. Househound reads the address, client, email and date from each PDF, and you can correct them. Archived reports are read-only: you can search, open, download and share them, but they don't become Househound inspections. Only PDFs are accepted, not HomeGauge's own report files.
Step 8: Set up services, your agreement, emails, the booking page and Stripe
Add your services and fees and any price rules for square footage, bedrooms or units. Upload your agreement (a .docx works for agreements) and choose when it goes out. Go through the client and agent emails and paste in your HomeGauge wording. Set your booking start times and crew rules.
Connect your own Stripe account from Househound's payment settings. Money goes straight to that account. Each client card payment carries 3.25% + 40¢, and that includes Stripe's processing, so it's one deduction.
Step 9: Write one real inspection in Househound with HomeGauge still installed
Use one of your 3 free reports on a real job, start to finish on the phone: photos, dictated findings, publish. There's no desktop step; the report is finished in the app or on the web. Keep HomeGauge for jobs already booked there until they're delivered.
Step 10: Move your booking link, then cancel HomeGauge
Point your website's booking link at your Househound booking page, or paste the booking widget onto the page. To cancel HomeGauge, go to Settings → My Subscriptions → Submit Account Management Request → Proceed to Form in the Inspector Dashboard; HomeGauge handles it within a few business days (HomeGauge: software billing). Cancel a HomeGauge website separately if you have one.
Can Househound read HomeGauge .ht5 templates?
No. A .ht5 file is HomeGauge's own template format, and Househound doesn't open it. Some vendors convert .ht5 files for you; Househound doesn't, and there's no done-for-you migration service.
What Househound reads is what HomeGauge can print: a PDF of a report. Autodraft turns it into an area › item › comment template and fills your comment library, and you review the draft before using it. The more comments the PDF contains, the more complete the template, which is why a practice report with everything selected beats a real one.
If a PDF doesn't come through the way you expect, email hello@househoundusa.com with the file.
What doesn't carry over (and what to do instead)
Househound builds templates and the comment library from your HomeGauge PDFs, imports contacts from a spreadsheet, and keeps past report PDFs in a read-only archive. The rest is set up fresh or works differently.
| HomeGauge | In Househound |
|---|---|
| Past reports | Upload saved PDFs to the past-report archive. Keep the data folder, the dashboard uploads and the report list too. |
| Services, ScheduleNow, automated emails | Set up fresh. |
| Narrative and Grid report styles | One report design, delivered as a link with a PDF download of the same report. |
| TREC and Florida Wind Mitigation | Built in: NPMA-33, TREC REI 7-6, Florida wind mitigation (OIR-B1-1802 Rev. 04/26) and the Citizens 4-Point. Florida forms print in Househound's layout of the questions, not the official OIR PDF. HomeGauge lists more state and pest forms than these. |
| Create Request List for agents | The client or buyer's agent builds a repair request from the published report and shares it as a link, copies it as text, downloads a CSV or prints it. |
| Lock the report until it's paid | Not available. Househound can hold a report until the agreement is signed. |
| HomeGauge Protect | Not available. |
If you rely on a state or pest form beyond those four, or on locking reports until they're paid, that's a reason to stay or keep HomeGauge for those jobs. The Househound vs HomeGauge comparison covers the rest.
Keeping old HomeGauge reports
Your old reports are in two places, and you should keep both.
- On your computer: The HomeGauge data folder holds every report you wrote on that machine. Copy it to an external drive and keep it. To open those report files later you need HomeGauge's software; HomeGauge doesn't publish what the software can still do after you cancel, so ask HomeGauge support before you cancel if you'll need that. Saving PDFs of the reports you must retain, one at a time with the steps above, removes the question.
- On the Inspector Dashboard: Reports you uploaded stay online for at least 5 years, per HomeGauge, and Export Report List gives you a spreadsheet of them.
- In Househound's past-report archive: the PDFs you save can be uploaded under Reports → Archive → Past reports, where they're searchable by address, client, email and date. You can open or download one, email it to the client, or copy a share link (valid 90 days, and you can turn it off). Web only.
HomeGauge publishes no bulk "save every report as a PDF" option, so save the ones you'll need first.
HomeGauge-specific gotchas
- HomeGauge is part of Spectora. Spectora acquired HomeGauge on April 1, 2025. Both products are still sold, and HomeGauge's pricing page now offers Spectora too.
- Web Writer is gone. HomeGauge's browser-based Web Writer shut down on September 30, 2025. If you used it, your templates were kept only if you moved to Spectora, and the 3 months of read-only access to old Web Writer reports has passed. A PDF of a report you delivered is the way to rebuild that template now.
- The data folder can be hidden. If it's under AppData, turn on hidden items in File Explorer's View settings, or use File → Show Data folder.
- Windows to anywhere: HomeGauge's report writer is Windows only. Househound's dashboard runs in any browser and the apps run on iPhone, iPad and Android, so a Mac or a tablet works for the whole job.
- Word files: HomeGauge agreements you kept as Word documents can be uploaded to Househound's agreement page as they are. A template or comment list in Word imports directly as a .docx; an older .doc has to be saved as .docx or PDF first.
Questions
Can I import my HomeGauge templates into Househound?
Not the .ht5 files themselves. Save a HomeGauge report as a PDF (Publish → Report for Printing or Saving → Print → save icon) and import that on Househound's Templates page; Autodraft reads it into a draft template and comment library you review.
Where are my HomeGauge templates stored?
In the HomeGauge data folder on your Windows computer, usually in a Templates folder inside Documents\HomeGauge, as .ht5 files. In the Desktop Report Writer, File → Show Data folder opens the folder your copy is using.
Do my HomeGauge clients and past reports come over?
Yes, as files. Contacts import from a CSV or Excel file (People → Clients or Agents → Import contacts…), and past reports saved as PDFs go into the read-only past-report archive (Reports → Archive → Past reports). Also copy the HomeGauge data folder and export your report list (My Reports → Export Report List) to keep.
Does HomeGauge keep my reports after I leave?
Reports you uploaded to the Inspector Dashboard are kept for at least 5 years, per HomeGauge. Reports you never uploaded exist only in the data folder on your computer.
Is HomeGauge shutting down?
No shutdown of the desktop software has been announced. HomeGauge's Web Writer ended on September 30, 2025, and HomeGauge has been part of Spectora since April 1, 2025.
Can I use Word files from HomeGauge?
Yes. Househound's template import reads Word .docx files directly into a draft template. An older .doc file has to be opened in Word and saved as .docx or PDF first. For agreements, upload the Word file as it is.
